No weigh in this week, as I want to try bi-weekly weigh ins for a bit…

…but I am still alive!

See?!  Funky shaped head and all! :P

I’m still doing the Body____ classes, and I’m having a lot of fun with them.  It’s a little weird being one of the only guys in the classes (usually), but I’m getting over that.

I also got a Personal Trainer!

Because I got a deal through work for the gym, I had three free personal training sessions.  The first two sessions were more of an orientation for the equipment (which I didn’t need, but whatever…) but during the third session I told him I wanted an intense workout, and he delivered!  I’m hoping that having his help (along with the classes) will get the ball rolling, especially since Personal Training isn’t exactly cheap!  It was quite a bit of money, but if you really think about it, it’s no more per session than I was spending on take out and fast food for a while there, so it’s merely a transfer of funds to something more appropriate ;)

I’ve paid for 8 sessions, so I was thinking that for the first 4 weeks I would do a session a week, and then maybe go bi-weekly after that, but get “homework” from him so that I know what to do in between out sessions.

Do any of you use a personal trainer? Does that seem like a decent idea or is there something else I should consider?

Tonight is BodyPump class…and maybe BodyVive.  I wasn’t too impressed with it when I tried it last week, but I might give it another go.  I’m scared to try Spin Class again…

Tonight is ALSO Biggest Loser, and I’m hoping to be around for some BL tweeting :)

Have a great day everyone!

Yesterday, while trying to expand my horizons in regards to the classes being offered by my new gym, I decided to sign up for the Brick Biking class.

“A group indoor cycling class for everyone! Experience one of the best workouts ever in this indoor cycling workout that utilizes resistance and speed changes that simulate an outdoor ride, without the hazards! Come inside and get the ride of your life!”

Compared to the Les Mills RPM class is offered, I thought this would be a lot easier and would serve as a nice “intro” to spin class.

Ugh.A typical RPM™ class.

For starters, there is no mileage counter on the spinner.  WTF is that crap?  That’s almost like going for a run and not being allowed to know how long you just ran.  Yeah, you are still getting a workout, but I’d like be able to know how much I accomplished, especially since I am pushing myself to complete 100 miles on the bike by the end of October.

Secondly, the bike seat…the evil…evil…bike seat.

When I went in there I didn’t think I’d have an issue.  I managed to get the seat into a somewhat comfortable position, but when the trainer came in, one of the first things she commented in was that the seat was too low, so she adjusted it for me in the beginning of class.  For the next hour, anytime we were “on the saddle” as she would say, was pure hell.

And yeah, my butt still hurts. :/

With all that, it was still a good workout, and the trainer said I did a great job for the first time, and recommended biking shorts.  I honestly never knew biking shorts were padded to account for the seat, so that may be a route to go.  Other people have suggested a padded seat, but I think I’ll try out the shorts first.

Will I try the class again? After I get some biking shorts, maybe.  In the meantime, I’ll be sticking with the recumbent bike :P

Triforce!

I just came back from another one of Les Mills Body classes.  This time was BodyCombat, and I have to say it was a lot of fun.  Here is the description from the Les Mills site:

BODYCOMBAT™ is the empowering cardio workout where you are totally unleashed. This fiercely energetic program is inspired by martial arts and draws from a wide array of disciplines such as karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai. Supported by driving music and powerful role model instructors, you strike, punch, kick and kata your way through calories to superior cardio fitness.

I have a little itty bit of experience in Tae Kwon Do, and it’s something I’ve been wanting to get back into, but a martial arts-ish class like this for the time being is a good (and cheaper) alternative.  I wouldn’t consider it to be nearly as intense as BodyPump and BodyAttack, but it’s still a lot of fun and is a good workout.  I was (jokingly) calling these three classes my Triforce of Pain, but it’s a good pain, and I think a mix of these three classes would be a good way to go weekly.  I’m noticing that I’m pushing myself harder than I really would on my own, mostly because I don’t want to look like a pussy in front of my classmates :)   There are some other classes I want to try too, like RPM and Aqua Sculpt, so we’ll see how everything fits into (hopefully) a nice routine.

Running, Walking, and Cycling, oh my!

I was looking on my training breakdown on Dailymile this morning, and I came to see something…

I suck.  Especially lately! My mileage has been terrible all around these past few months, and even into September, which was supposed to be my ”reset.”  I want to try to break the trend though, so between now and the end of October I would like to push to add 200 miles to my mileage totals.  100 of those miles will be cycling, and 100 of those miles will be running/walking.  I’m still grouping running and walking together because I know I have some work to do before I’m able to run like I was earlier in the year, but hopefully by the end of October I will have made some headway.  I pulled off 200 miles in January, it was hard, but I did it, so I know I can do another round.

Weigh-Ins

I’m kind of worried that I am going to have a gain this week.  The scale has been looking that way and I don’t exactly think I can turn it around in the next two days.  After Tuesday though, I’m considering going to bi-weekly weigh ins.  The scale really is just a number, and it isn’t giving you the number you want, it can really devastate your mindset.  And even when you are doing a good job, it’s still possible to have a bad week. So with that in mind, I’d like to focus more on just trying to get fit and not worrying about what the scale says (although I do hope it’ll still turn out favorably). I was originally considering going to monthly weigh ins, but I don’t know if I could stand to wait that long, to be honest.

Anniversary

I started this blog on October 8th, 2009, which means my one year blogiversary is approaching!  I wish I had more to show for it, like six pack abs or killer biceps, but the journey definitely hasn’t been easy.  While in some ways this year has been lackluster, in other ways I do think I’ve kicked ass.  Year two will have less lackluster and more asskicking though, I promise you that :)   If you want to send me presents though, I’m more than willing to accept them (I kid, I kid)!

That’s all I got for now, peeps. Hope you’ve had a great weekend.
