Round four of challenge updates, and almost through with the first month of 2010.  How am I doing so far?  You be the judge…

NEW YEAR CHALLENGES

New Year 100 Mile Running Challenge
-Only three days left, and 18.86 miles to go.  I can still rock this b*tch, but it does kind of suck that I’ve let it get down to the wire like this.  I honestly though I’d be closer to being done, if not already done, by now.

New Year 500 Mile Biking Challenge
-I’ve already accepted the fact that I am not going to get to 500 miles w/ this challenge, but I want to at least get 100 miles under my belt. I am currently at 92.9 miles, so I have 7.1 miles left.

This is going to be a cardio loaded weekend, it looks like :)

PERFECT 10 CHALLENGE

And here is my Perfect 10 update for the week:

  • Lose at least 15 pounds (starting weight 245 pounds)–7.6 pounds down, 7.4 pounds to go.  This past weeks weigh in was less than spectacular, but I still lost.  I’m hoping for a few good weeks to come up though.
  • Run/walk/jog 200 miles81.14 miles down, and I plan to be halfway done (100 miles) by the end of weekend. My spiffy new runinng shoes will certainly help w/ this goal. WooT!
  • Strength train at least twice a weekUhh…success, actually!  WOOHOO!  I did strength training in the gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and I did a little bit at home this morning w/ my dumbbells.  It’s a start…
  • Run a 5k road raceNo change here, 5k is done, still getting ready for The Bear Run 4-Miler.
  • Finish at least one of this semesters college coursesNot yet, but working on it.  School sucks, bla bla bla…
  • Beat Super Mario Brothers WiiHalfway through World 6, F*CK YEAH!  Made a goal for myself to be in World 7 by Tuesday.  I’m sure I’ll be able to get some play time in, so we’ll see.
  •

Steve is also asking we post something that noone knows about us, so here goes:  I hate bananas.  I think the texture, the taste, and the smell are amongst the most disgusting things in existence.  Anything banana flavored as well is a no go.  I can usually fair a bit better w/ flavored things (I don’t like strawberrys for example, but I like strawberry flavored stuff), but anything and everything banana is just gross.

    HABIT.A.WEEK CHALLENGE

Lyn from Escape from Obesity is hosting a Habit.A.Week Challenge. The goal is easy enough, to make a small change each work in order to live a healthier lifestyle.  The “habit” however, was two fold, it was the increase your fiber intake, BUT, if you already eat enough fiber, to eat it from real food (as in fruits, veggies, beans, etc…not fiber one bars, yogurt, etc..)

Umm…yeah.  I always try to get the full daily value of fiber in, sure, but most of my fiber comes from Fiber One cereal.  One cup of that and you are good to go.  I have certainly upped the veggie intake and all, but not enough to ensure enough fiber, so I rely on the cereal. This one needs some work.

That’s all I have for now.  I am looking forward to finalizing the January New Year Challenges this weekend, and then moving forward into February.  What’s next, you ask? Stay tuned…

TGIF and have a great weekend!

    1. FIIIIIIRRSSST!!!!

You’re on fire this week, Steve! I love that you were a success at strength training too…don’t let it be your nemesis!

I hate the texture of bananas too, but I love the flavor. I’ve never had fiber one cereal, but I definitely need to up my fiber levels. Obviously you like the cereal enough to eat it, but do you really like it or just eat it for the fiber? I’d like to find something that I REALLY like that has a lot of fiber in it.

      • I actually do like the cereal alot, so its all good. Before it was just for the fiber, but it has since grown on me :)

I’d still rather be eating Coco Puffs and Peanut Butter Crunch, but meh. :-P

I’m going to try develop an understanding w/ Strength Training, but I don’t think we’ll ever be friends.

    2. Wow. Never known anyone to have such strong a strong reaction to a banana. I guess this means you never taste my world-famous banana bread? Huh?

Tell me what you’re going to school for. And don’t tell me here, because I never think to come read your follow ups. I’m sure there’s a way to subscribe to them or something, but I am definitely not smarter than the blog. What can I say.

    3. Cardio loading this weekend is a million times better than carbo loading, so get to it, man! :-) I feel the same way about apples and kiwi – anything apple turns my gut, and I can handle kiwi if it’s blended into a smoothie…so I get what you’re saying. My favorites just happen to be bananas and strawberries, though!

    4. I like banana pudding, but only the pudding and cookies, no actual bananas :)
That whole I hate fruits thing :P

Good job on the goals this week…you’re right on track! have a good weekend…it’s snowing and sleeting here so the town is about to shut down. MADNESS I TELL YOU, COMPLETE MADNESS!

      • Banana pudding is cookies is gross too, bah! :-P

Glad we aren’t the only ones suffering w/ snow though, it started coming down during my walk this morning. BOOOO!

    5. Half my family is allergic to bananas and I’m not a huge fan myself, but try blending them into smoothies if you want the vitamins and fiber.

Looking at a cardio weekend myself. One last push should have me finished the biking challenge, but I must confess, my knees are not happy with me.

I meant to ask, why did you pick 100 miles for running and 500 miles for biking in the first place?

      • Haha…I chose 500 miles for the biking challenge b/c I’m a dumbass :-P I hadn’t really had much biking experience, but I wanted to set up a challenge as a way to kinda force myself into it. I really didn’t know what to expect mileage wise, but I knew one could bike faster than they could run, so I thought 500 seemed reasonable-ish. I asked my friend about it and he said it was feasible.

Obviously I won’t be asking him anymore :-P

I chose 100 miles for the Running Challenge b/c I had hosted a Marathon Week Challenge a little bit ago (26.2 miles in a week), and there was alot of success with that, so 100 miles seems like a natural extension of that. Still hard as f*ck though!

    6. Peaches…I love fresh ones but, anything peach flavored makes me gag!! Love bananas though.

Awesome job on your goals so far. I need to go hard to get in my miles. The challenge ends at 12 midnight on the 31st?? My time zone seems to be many hours later than the time zone for daily burn so I will need to get to it early on Sunday to make sure my miles count.

      • Not a huge peach fan either, but I don’t absolutely hate them as much as bananas :-P

I think dailyburn runs off of West Coast time, unfortunately. I noticed that with the Marathon Week challenge b/c the time doesn’t match up with my time zone either. I’m sure you won’t have an issue though, you’re rocking this!

    7. Congrats on the achievements! No bananas huh? My thing is eggs. Wish I could stand em, seems like egg whites are super healthy. Also fish. Super healthy, can’t stand seafood. Taking an omega-3 vitamin instead. Ah well there’s always a work around! Best

    8. Man you are rocking your 100 mile running challenge, I have no doubt you’ll make it!

And I’m sorry, but I love bananas, have one with my breakfast every morning :)

    9. That sounds like an intense hatred of bananas! :-) Great week Steve, really great week!

    10. I love super mario bros wii, that’s what my bros, cousins, and I did most of Christmas day. Except, they kept picking me up or eating me with their yoshis, apparantly I don’t always do things right, he he.
Great job on the challenges, you have a lot going there.

      • I ate my mom w/ Yoshi a few times…she was sucking at that game.

I have a TON going on, almost too much to handle, unfortunately, but I’m trying :)

    11. Hi Steve,

I guess bananas foster is out of the question… You are rocking your goals. Good work! Congratulations on your weight loss so far – you are doing great!

    12. Dude, you’re a cardio mad man! I’m mostly a strength training guy, I hit the weights hard and then do my 15-20 minutes of cardio and I’m done!

Most times I wish I can skip the cardio but I do it.

      Keep it up!

I’m trying to do it, but I’m not going to like it.

    14. That’s so funny — bananas are one of my favorite fruits!

    15. Bananas are good as long as they’re not too brown and mushy. Then they must absolutely be made into banana nut bread.

Fresh apples disgust me. I can’t stand the texture. Just listening to someone eat one drives me crazy. If you take away the skin and cook them down, then I’m good.
