Jan 082010

TGIF everyone, I hope your first full week of the year has been fruitful.

To start out 2010, I’ve become involved in several challenges to help me reach my long term goals.  Here is the first update…WooT!

NEW YEAR CHALLENGES

New Year 100 Mile Running Challenge
-We’re off to a great start, and we have FIFTEEN challenges! That is beyong awesome, but I am officially getting my butt whooped. I am in 7th place w/ 14.41 miles, but I am confident I will finish the challenge.  I will probably not do any running today, but I hope I knock out a chunk tomorrow, and I have my (FIRST) 5k on Sunday. WOOHOO!

New Year 500 Mile Biking Challenge
-I am resolving to complete this challenge, but I am not AS CONFIDENT as I am about the running challenge. Out of 5 challengers, I am in second place w/ 59.16miles.  In first place, Alex is destroying it at 109.35 miles.  AWESOME JOB!

That’s it for my own challenges, good luck to everyone participating.  If you weren’t, we still have alot of time left, so why not sign up and see what you can do?

PERFECT 10 CHALLENGE

And here is my Perfect 10 update for the week:

  • Lose at least 15 pounds (starting weight 245 pounds)–down 2.4 pounds so far…looking good (so far!)
  • Run/walk/jog 200 miles–14.41 miles down, 185.59 miles to go…dddaaammmmnnn
  • Strength train at least twice a week–SUCCESS!  I did upper body circuits on Sunday and Tuesday, and lower body on Monday and Wednesday
  • Run a 5k road race–This WILL be a success as of my NEXT update.  I am running the Mighty Medford Freeway 5k on Sunday and I am getting more and more excited every day.
  • Finish at least one of this semesters college courses–I haven’t really worked on anything since the new year started.  I had done some work after Christmas to get ahead, but it kind of defeats the purpose if you stop after that.  I will accomplish this though :)
  • Beat Super Mario Brothers Wii–I did finally make it to World 4, but OMG this game is so hard.  Watch for a full post/whinefest coming soon!
  •

Steve is also asking we post something that noone knows about us, so here goes:  I’ve been skydiving.  I know, right?  I went in 2003 before I started college, and It.Was.AWESOME!

    HABIT.A.WEEK CHALLENGE

Lyn from Escape from Obesity is hosting a Habit.A.Week Challenge. The goal is easy enough, to make a small change each work in order to live a healthier lifestyle.  The “habit” for this week was to fix your water intake..

…and I’m doing okay. I’ve mentioned this before, but I do fine w/ my water while I’m at work.  I have a 32oz cup that I fill and refill at least 3 times over the course of my shift.  Its when at home on the evenings and weekends that I flounder, but I am working on it.  The past two nights I’ve had one big cup of water, but I want to do better.  We’ll see how this goes.

And…that’s it?  How are you all doing with your goals so far?

    1. Skydiving? Wow! That is something I don’t know that I could do. Great update Steve! Keep at it!

      • Thanks Steve! It was totally awesome and I can’t wait to do it again. Gotta get back down at least 220lbs before I can do…so there’s some motivation :D

    2. Good going at your goals. Sky Diving, huh? Not me, no way!

    3. Hey congrats on the Perfect 10 challenge – your updates are fantastic! I love these challenges as they keep me in line!

      • Thanks Sandra, congrats to you as well, you’re doing good with your goals too-I hope you can back into the piano soon, that’d be sweet! I love challenges like these too, keep you in line and make you push yourself in many ways!

    4. I’m hurting on that bike challenge. Taking me about an hour to do around 13 miles, so at that rate I’ll need to put in close to 40 hours biking this month. They way my legs felt after doing 32 miles in two days I can see this might be an issue.

I’ll keep biking though, will be interesting to see how close I can get to the 500.

      • Do the best you can, don’t kill yourself. Even if you don’t get to 500, you will still probably accomplish more than you would have otherwise, which is always WooTworthy.

    5. You’ve been skydiving?! O.M.G I’m soooo jealous! I once dated someone who was an experienced jumper and working on the tandem instructor certification…but I never got the chance to go!

My trainer told me to shoot for my body weight in ounces of water daily, but a gallon is the absolute daily minimum. He is always asking me about my water intake! If you drink your 32 oz. cup at work 3 times, that’s 96 oz. If you increase the # of cups to 4 per day, you’ll have a full gallon (128 oz) down the hatch! AT WORK! Anything you consume @ home then would be an added bonus!

You’re doing an awesome job on your goals!

      • Thanks Erin…I always thought it would be SO AWESOME to become a skydiving instructor..that sucks that you never got to go, but there is always time :)

    6. Well done on the P10′s, I love the super mario 1.

Good luck for your run :)

    7. Wow, Steve, you’re really stoked, focusing on so many excellent challenges. Congratulations on the progress! I find I drink lots of water at the office as well, simply because I have a water bottle on my desk. Perhaps keep a bottle in full view at home would do the trick…

Skydiving sounds incredibly SCARY and FUN at the same time!

    8. You are doing awesome! 31 miles on the road so far for me. ;)

    9. I am so jealous that you get to do a 5K. I’m still not allowed, as my weight is too much for my joints. Oh well; at least I can still do cardio.

Awesome on the skydiving, too. That’s one of those things I’ve always wanted to do but not sure if I’d even have the guts if the time actually came. :)

      • Weight isn’t going to be an issue forever. Soon enough you will be running 5k’s, 10k’s, marathons, etc…etc…and then you’ll go skydiving, b/c you’ll be feeling all sorts of awesome. hehehe.

    10. Great job on your goals Steve! You are going to kick ass!

I think I would sky dive if the option ever came up for me. It would be totally thrilling!

I am excited to here all about your 5k experience. I know you will do great. Have fun!

      • Hehehe…I’m just hoping to do “okay”. I’m getting more and more nervous w/ each passing hour :-P

You’re kicking ass w/ your own goals as well, WooT!

    11. You are doing good Steve!

I need to hop on your next challenge because my new running shoes need to get more action than they currently are. I’m blaming it on the snow?

      • The snow IS a pain in the butt, and if not for it I’d probably be trying to do more outside. There will definitely be challenges after these end (i love these things), just gotta figure out what?

    12. “If at first you don’t succeed, then skydiving is not for you.”

LOL–I’ve always loved that quote. You continue to rock on all the challenges. GO STEVE! :)

Mario Update–Last night I finished beating the game with all the coins, so Level 9 is totally unlocked. I tried one level and wow…talk about impossible! :/

      Have a great weekend!

      • I’d like to sympathize with you, but you stuck on world 9…I can’t make it through world 4. So yeah, shut up!

        Totally kidding, btw!!!!!!!!!!

        • Don’t forget OH HOW LONG it took me to get thru all these worlds. You know how you feel on Mario? That’s how I feel when I “run” (aka try to run)…like it’ll never happen. Hopefully we’ll both be accomplished on our goals in a few months! :)

    13. Just found your blog, see you at the race later this morning! You’ll do great!
